I was actually revisiting Fiona's album from last year, Fetch the Bolt Cutters. I forwarded to my 43-year younger daughter the Grammy award winning song off of that album, Shameika. She loved it by the way and thought that was reasonably hip of me.
What I learned along the way is that it was based on a real-life experience for her with a real Shameika Stepney. They were in the same private grade school in Harlem for a while. Shameika noticed Fiona being made fun of by the "mean girls" and in a casual chat in passing told her not to pay any attention to the bullies and that she had potential.
I read a nice article about the inspiring Shameika in Pitchfork that tells the story of a short moment they shared and the impact of a real act of kindness and support.
