the counter to life or long term appointments is that they can make decisions free from politics being the main concern --- think house of Rep v Senate -- 2 years v 6 years ---- that same idea - some freedom from worrying every minute about re-election is good

but why not 15 year terms -- appointed should be good on assumption POTUS picks good people and Congress only approves good people. (Although for reasons beyond me --- given 100 to chose from - Potus often picked the one or two judges for appeals court that the profession on the whole said my god they are askholes (this is like 1% of potential judges - beat up by the profession based on history and yet this potus found he needed about 5-10 times to pick these idiots ---- although congress REFUSED about half the time on this idiot group)

15 years ---- appointed on merit and history and reviewed by Congress - should be better than partisan elections. In IL I vote on judges - say 20 a cycle ---- so I go the newspapers and find what the lawyer associations said --- and again they "approve" say 95% but based on history they say 5% are not qualified -- so I follow that in voting (v voting just by party. If enough people do what I do (and many and more that I know do the exact same thing - R and L ) --- it is the same outcome as appointed

but 15 year limit so they do not think they are GOD

and some process -- high bar - to reverse them
