You raise interesting points about the "questionable" ethics of medical research. I once took a course in medical ethics (20 or so years ago, but am betting little has changed since), and, as I recall, the conclusion regarding the US medical research system is that it is run by and for components of the medical system. Patients are the fodder, the tests are not run for their benefit, but for those proposing, paying for and conducting the test. There are rules regarding undue risk, etc. but overall, tests do not normally get started, stopped, used for a wider purpose or otherwise altered, outside of existing research guidelines. But, as a practicing ER doc, you already know that, right, and are just kind of venting, yes?
