Not exactly.
Again, remember I am not an expert.

My take is say a HF has 100,000 naked shorts. They buy and remove the 100,000 shares from the market. The shares are not sold back into the market, thus the market has 100,000 more buys than sells. More buys than sells means the stock price should rise.

It would seem that they would have to buy the counterfeit share but can’t return it because they have nothing to return, so they have to buy again but a real share this time so they have one to return. In short, every counterfeit share they have out there they have to buy twice in order to cover.
