treasury stock is that which is owned by the company. show me how many shares that the company holds and are entitled to retire.

retiring stocks to treasury requires a company to "acquire" stock first, which they can then hold in a treasury or retire. they cannot just grab some stock and retire them. a company can either hold stock currently in the treasury that they previously "issued" to itself or they can buy them on the open market, and then retire them. otherwise, they cannot do it.
