As scientists have shown with yeast bio-factories...

This not only makes fermentation expensive and uncompetitive with oil refining, but it also means that production of these next generation bio-products competes with the human food supply by taking up arable land.

Exactly, there is loads of energy used to boil the water. That energy comes from nuclear, oil, or natural gas, which is not "eco-friendly".

In addition, reeling silk takes lots of energy as well.
