Bill Schaefer stepped down in Nevada. Tom Pillsworth was in NY. So, Tom probably had to communicate with Bill through a series of emails to get information from him. We don't know what was in those correspondences, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Bill lied about where the bitcoin and other assets were located just to get Tom off his back. He could have easily told Tom that the bitcoin and keys were still at the facility. Hence sending Tom on a wild goose chase.
