In 2010, African Minerals Ltd. $AMLZF forcibly relocated hundreds of villagers to establish the Tonkolili mine. Police brutality against female and male protestors continued with impunity.

After the Sierra Leone civil war ended in the early 2000s, it has since given favorable treatment towards British mining companies, which routinely do not adhere to mining regulations and evade taxes. Over half the national GDP comes from mining, yet the people see very little of the profit. For instance, whereas African Minerals Ltd. (AML) profited $1 billion in 2015, only 6% of that amount would have been enough to send every child to school for a year, yet even that small fraction was not given back to public services. Land grabbing is also rife, with many companies additionally running prostitution rings to supply white British mine workers with vulnerable and often underage prostitutes, exacerbating HIV crises
