Nikola: Less Drama, More Execution Expected in 2021, Says J.P. Morgan
December 28, 2020
Drama, drama and more drama; That sums up 2020 pretty well. It could also perfectly describe Nikola’s (NKLA) first year as a publicly traded company. There have been highs, as the EV truck maker’s stock soared initially due to investors buying in to the promising growth story, followed by crashing lows. These included allegations of fraud by the company’s founder and his subsequent resignation and disappointing or altogether cancelled deals. Not to mention, the share price falling off a cliff.

However, heading into 2021, J.P. Morgan analyst Paul Coster expects the Nikola news flow “to be less drama-filled and to turn generally positive.”

Nikola shares have come under pressure from several fronts, part of the price collapse was due to an abandoned partnership with waste collection company Republic Services, in addition to a severely pared back relationship with General Motors. However, Coster urges investors to look at the bright sides.

For Nikola, Valuation and Financial Analysis Argue to Stay Away
Jan 25, 2021, 11:17 am EST

One of the most important ethical concerns is that Nikola showed a video about one of its trucks, implying that it was fully functional. In reality, it proved that it was not. And while the company never said that its truck wasn’t fully functional, it did not deny it either. This is a clear sign of misrepresentation to the investment public.

Nikola: Expecting More from the Order Book and a Competitive Advantage
Back in August 2020, Nikola reported a large order of 2,500 electric garbage trucks from Republic Services. Upon the material announcement, NKLA stock gained almost 20%. Then in December 2020, it was reported that the deal was canceled. Does Nikola have any significant orders left?

What about the competitive advantage of Nikola’s technology? The company is focusing to disrupt the hydrogen economy by building trucks that will be powered by hydrogen and electric batteries. It is investing in developing hydrogen fueling station infrastructure, a technology that is costly and not widely adopted today for mass transportation. So what if this investment in this hydrogen related infrastructure does not pay off? It will be a bad investment decision with a significant negative impact on future profitability.

Nikola Details North American Fuel-Cell Vehicle Program
Published February 23, 2021

The first Tre FCEV prototype builds are scheduled to begin in Arizona and Ulm, Germany in Q2 2021, with testing and validation of the vehicles continuing into 2022, and production commencing planned for the second half of 2023.
The Nikola Two FCEV Sleeper is a long-haul freight solution with hydrogen capacity allowing a non-stop range of up to 900 miles. The Two FCEV leverages the weight advantage of hydrogen in long-range, long-haul zero-emission commercial transportation. The Two FCEV will be based on a new chassis custom designed for North American long-haul routes and is anticipated to launch in late 2024.

NIKOLA FUEL-CELL AND HYDROGEN STORAGE SYSTEMS

The Nikola Tre and Nikola Two FCEVs are expected to utilize multiple common fuel-cell power modules and scalable hydrogen storage systems. Both systems are currently in development and testing with industry leaders in collaboration with Nikola Engineering. The first Tre prototypes utilizing these systems are expected to begin road testing in 2022.

“Our plan is to enter the market in steps,” said Roycht. “We are building on the current Tre platform with the planned launch of our fuel-cell and hydrogen storage systems in 2023. These systems are designed to be scalable in order to handle the greater power and longer-range requirements for long-haul, which allows for concurrent integration into the chassis design of the Nikola Two FCEV Sleeper. Utilizing common components and systems for hydrogen propulsion will support greater economies of scale and also allow Nikola to continuously expand and adapt our FCEV truck portfolio to address the diverse requirements of commercial trucking.”
