Hedge funds absolutely do the same things, but also have lobbying $$ that affect what the SEC does. I suspect this will die down after the SEC does a round of charges for some of the largest individual moneymakers with gamestop.
It WOULD be nice to have a completely free market though, wouldn't it? ;)
