Key difference is we wouldn't be enriching any Uranium to make a weapon. The NPT is to stop the spread of weapons, we are allowed to posses Nuclear weapons by the NPT. I see nothing in the treaty which doesn't allow us to develop reuses of what we have... I do agree it is a bad idea, but doing so is not the same thing as IRAN developing a weapon.
