This is what I found from TDAmeritrade.

The last day you can trade for a given tax year is different for long and short positions. For long positions, your sell trade must execute on or before the last trading day of December to be reported for that year. For short positions, your buy to cover trade must settle on or before the last trading day of December to be reported for that year. For more information, see the links below.
