EP, I guess it would depend on how you define different and on how they disable the links and channel(permanent or reversible). If it's permanent, then once they're disabled they are essentially different dice.

Elmer, I tried looking up die pictures, but could not find any. Actually, there is little information on the web on the specifics of Athlon64 die size. The FX-51 is well documented as 193mm2. For instance, geek.com:

shows the die size for the FX and Opteron, but not A64. However, I must correct my error about cache size - I though the A64 had less cache, but it looks like all K8 chips have 1152KB cache on board.

Given this fact, it is likely that it really is the same die with the extra HT and memory controller disabled. Compared to cache, these two things don't take up much space.

Now, I sometimes do post facts from memory, and it is almost always correct.
