[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The government decided to contribute 3 million dollars this year to the'Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Initiative (CEPI)', which is leading the development of vaccines for infectious diseases such as novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). decided.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 25th, Ambassador Nam Young-sook to the Republic of Norway held a video signing ceremony with Richard Hachet, representative of the Infectious Diseases Innovation Association, and signed the agreement on behalf of the Korean government. The government plans to contribute 3 million dollars annually to the Infectious Diseases Innovation Alliance by 2022 using the'International Disease Eradication Fund', which is an air ticket solidarity fund.

The Association for Infectious Diseases Innovation is a health-specialized organization launched in 2017 with the aim of raising funds for the development of vaccines for new infectious diseases. In relation to Corona 19, it is supporting the development of a total of nine vaccine candidates, including Modena and AstraZeneca. In particular, we are providing 6.9 million dollars (approximately 8.4 billion won) in research funding for domestic clinical trials of a corona 19 vaccine candidate (Inovio), and a contract for use of facilities related to corona 19 vaccine production has been signed with our pharmaceutical company.

This decision is based on the importance of the international community's solidarity and cooperation to overcome the COVID-19 health crisis, such as the World Health Assembly and the United Nations General Assembly.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "As the importance of developing safe and effective vaccines and equitable access is being emphasized in the Corona 19 situation, the government's contribution to the Infectious Disease Innovation Alliance is the'Corona 19 Vaccine Pre-Purchase Commitment Mechanism (COVAX AMC)' to support vaccines in developing countries. It is meaningful to actively contribute to the development and distribution of vaccines following their commitment to contribution.
