Toon Stegmann says he has found a way in which a homemade mouth mask can be used safely. With a lemon and some washing-up liquid, he shows how he makes the mouth mask 'virus-killing'.
Stegmann currently spends almost all of his time on the corona virus. He works at a biotechnology company that is working on a vaccine for the coronavirus, which is currently gripping the entire world.
Mouth masks are used in healthcare as protection against the virus, but they are very scarce. This gives rise to all kinds of initiatives to make face masks yourself. In the former ID college at the Jan Evertsenlaan in Katwijk is one of those initiatives where volunteers make and collect masks themselves for (home) care. Marente, among others, makes eager use of this.
Stegmann thinks this is a good initiative, but was concerned about the long (re) use of the masks. The face mask would not protect against the virus long enough and a washing machine would not kill the virus.
A combination of lemon and washing-up liquid does, the Rijnsburger remembers from a thesis he wrote in the 1980s. His solution to make the face mask virucidal is not a new invention. According to Stegmann, it even had a patent, but it has now expired. Stegmann: 'Nobody has thought of it yet'.

Stegmann does place a warning: 'It is not an' invulnerability shield '. You can always get infected with the virus. Mainly with your hands and through your face. So please also take all other measures seriously '.
