It is my understanding that the Hemodefend beads IN the bag of blood system will increase the shelf life from 3 months to 6 months and possibly a year with further studies. O neg is the universal doner. So as an example an A or B type blood donor would NOT be able to donate to O or to each other with either 'in the bag' or' in the transfusion line' beads. I'm open to amplification if any part of the above info is incorrect.
