My older brother( by 1 year) and I bought an orange 1972 vw squareback in 1982 for $400, on the spot, in the summer between my sophmore and junior year in college(we both attended the same college, and with 7 kids born within 9 years, and one car between parents and kids, my bro and I "broke the perverbial bank" back then and shelled out.
My mother quickly dubbed it the "orange crate". Lasted another 3-4 years((with little maintenance(one learns as they go I reckon)).
