BitFlyer and Brave's New Partnership to Finally Let Japanese Users Earn BAT

A new partnership between BitFlyer and Brave enables Japanese users to earn BAT by watching ads on the Brave browser.

Japanese users will soon be able to earn Basic Attention Token (BAT) by viewing Brave ads.

On July 30, major Japanese cryptocurrency exchange BitFlyer partnered with Brave Software International SEZC, a subsidiary of Brave Software — the maker of the crypto-enabled browser Brave.

Within the partnership, the firms co-developed a crypto asset wallet in the Brave browser that allows Japanese users to receive BAT for viewing Brave ads. Japanese Brave users will also be able to buy or sell BAT on BitFlyer as well as tip BAT to publishers and content creators.

While several exchanges in Japan support BAT — including BitFlyer — current regulations block users in the country from earnering BAT by viewing ads.

Instead, Japanese users can earn BAT Points, but these can't be exchanged to BAT, other cryptocurrencies or even the Japanese yen.

Speaking to Cointelegraph, BitFlyer explained that the new wallet will allow users to receive BAT, as the exchange is already a regulated entity in Japan.

Earlier this month, BitFlyer and Brave initially announced that they would develop “a crypto asset wallet for Brave browser users.”

According to today's announcement, the new crypto wallet is called "the Integrated Wallet" and is expected to roll out in November 2020.

Kumihiro Mine, president of BitFlyer, said the partnership would "serve as a model case for new possibilities for cryptocurrency, not just as an investment option."

"Even those who have not been exposed to cryptocurrency will feel more familiar with them by increasing the opportunities to own and use cryptocurrency through the Brave browser," he said.

Brave browser adds new tricks to protect crypto users from phishing attacks

The privacy-based browser is adding anti-phishing solutions from PhishFort.

According to a Sept. 8 tweet from Brave, the privacy-based browser has incorporated open source solutions from cybersecurity firm PhishFort. The aim is to help prevent phishing attacks — a scam that usually involves tricking a victim into giving up personal information with a fake email that leads to a fake website. Brave stated that the firm’s software would detect crypto scams and warn users about suspicious domains.

Details about the integration are scant at present, however a PhishFort report from June said that: “when the reward is as valuable and anonymous as cryptocurrency assets and secrets, these attackers quickly iterate and target the most used and most talked about apps.”

“When you’re a crypto-user, your username and password are only the start of your problems — and phishers are beginning to realize this [...] they’re beginning to exploit the specific tools that we use to interface with our crypto.”

The anti-phishing firm has been helping companies used by crypto holders defend themselves from similar attacks. In April, it assisted in removing 49 Google Chrome web browser extensions which targeted hardware and software wallet holders with phishing scams designed to steal their crypto assets.

Numerous users have already lost millions to phishing attacks. Cointelegraph reported last week that at least two Electrum wallet holders lost 1,400 and 36.5 Bitcoin (BTC) to a phishing scam, worth $14 million and $365,000, respectively.

Brave continues to be a popular web browser for many in the crypto community for its privacy and ad-blocking features as well as its Basic Attention Token rewards. As of Sept. 1, the platform has 18.3 million monthly active users.
