Can anyone here explain the mechanics of exactly HOW it was possible for a COMPANY to manipulate the share price on the OPEN MARKET, to cause such a quick drop in share price, resulting in the panic that ensued?

Sure, I can't imagine an easier thing to explain. The company lied repeatedly and raise people's expectations. Once it become obvious these unrealistic expectations would never be met lots of people called their broker and said they'd sell for one cent.
