The ability to distinguish between different forms of the sars viruses is in doubt using the technology. Although my search was limited to a 2017 paper, so improvements may be possible.

If you are aware of something more recent that confirms Bermans claims, I am all ears.

Without this proof, however, including confirmation by the FDA, I think the greys are inevitable.
