DD...I have been digging for the last few days to find out if SITA Mobile Check-in will become ubiquitous. There is a lot of information, so I don't know where to start.
First, we know that Gavitec has been designed and implemented a full solution Mobile Ticketing, Mobile Check-in/Mobile Check-in by fingerprint (biometric identification of passengers) in service collaboration with leading providers Siemens Business Services and SITA Company presentation (July 2006) – Page 30 http://www.gavitec.com/fileadmin/template/main/downloads/MD_CorporatePresentation_F0607.pdf
About IATA. Over 60 years, IATA has developed the commercial standards that built a global industry. Today, IATA’s mission is to represent, lead and serve the airline industry. Its members comprise some 260 airlines - the world’s leading passenger and cargo airlines among them - representing 94 percent of international scheduled air traffic. http://www.iata.org/about/
SITA is playing a major role in the air transport industry. Old product name: SITA runs a reservations system called Gabriel (old name) , which is used by more than 160 airlines, many of them small carriers in Africa and Asia. Support for electronic ticketing was added to Gabriel at the end of 2004. http://www.microsoft.com/business/peopleready/news/economist/change.mspx
SITA MOBILE CHECK-IN: SITA has developed Mobile Check-in in conjunction with Siemens. Check-in is handled by a small piece of software on the phone, downloaded like a game or a ringtone. The software establishes a wireless connection with the reservation system, offers a choice of seats, and then retrieves the boarding-pass bar-code, which is stored in the handset.
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both interested in Mobile phone Check-in...The technology would involve a barcode transmitted to passengers' phones, bypassing the need for a magnetic boarding card. http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/2006/09/mobile_phones_c.html
