The cost of a mask...

Currently n95 masks cost hospitals 75 cents each. This cost includes the materials cost, manufacturing costs, shipping costs, and profits for manufacturers.

n95 masks weigh about 0.35 ounces. 100 masks weigh a kilo. A kilo of our silk is $300, so if we made 100 masks from our silk, that means the materials alone cost $3. Thus we are looking at a price point of about $6 per mask, assuming similar markups occur.

Would you rather buy masks for 75 cents each or $6 each?

The point here is that many potential applications of our GMO silks will not see the marketplace. It's too expensive to make things out of silk when you can make them out of paper.

Of course, there are many interesting and economically viable applications for our silks, but face masks is not on that list.
