KEY POINTS
ESPN executives are scrambling to figure out how to fill huge gaps in air time without live sports, according to people familiar with the matter.
While SportsCenter and other studio shows can fill air time in the near term, especially with NFL free agency set to begin next week, extended cancellations could force ESPN to get creative with new programming.
Long cancellations could be bad news for both ESPN and the traditional pay-TV ecosystem as live sports has kept millions of Americans from cutting the cord on cable.
