4. Use of masks is controversial. All I can say is for years droplet precautions in my hospital involve wearing a simple surgical mask. Of course, we take the mask off and wash our hands immediately upon exiting the room. I don't know if wearing a mask at all times would be as effective. It is unlikely that N95 masks are more effective than a simple surgical mask which is effective against direct inhalation of droplets.



In Hong Kong, 99% citizens wear surgical face mask. We had direct and painful experience in SARS. If you wear face mask, you can funnel over 90% of your breath downwards and to the sides. The receiver side can also reduce the risk of getting your breath by over 90% by wearing a face mask. Together, chance for infection is reduced to less than 1%. We are so close to China, yet we have only 120 confirmed cases. This new virus is highly infectious. A group of 9 people travelling to Egypt together was 100% infected. So, avoid close contact and do wear face mask. GLTA.
