A recession requires 2 consecutive quarters a drop in GDP Or as some economists prefer a 1.5 to 2 percent increase in unemployment. Note that means if we are at 3% unemployment then it would go to 4.5% to 5%. So technically we aren't in a recession but potentially in a severe downturn til it becomes a recession.
