Automated molecular diagnostics
LexaGene’s technology is designed to be operated by the individuals collecting the samples. No pipetting or molecular expertise is required – one of the many advantages over current technology on the market. The system can process two samples at a time in an asynchronous fashion.
Samples are loaded onto the analyzer with a single-use disposable sample preparation cartridge, and the user simply presses ‘go’ to initiate sample processing. Smart fluidics concentrates pathogens in samples up to 6 mL in volume, thereby minimizing the chances that subsampling causes a false negative result.
The genetic analyzer draws each liquid sample into a sample preparation cartridge, where microbes are concentrated and lysed before their genetic material is purified. The analyzer then pulls the purified genomic material from inside the cartridge into the system’s microfluidics where a series of real-time PCR reaction mixtures are assembled, highly multiplex qPCR reactions are amplified, and the results are analyzed.
A total of 15 reactions are assembled, the first of which is a negative control so the operator has confidence in the results. The remaining 14triplex real-time PCR reactions each have an internal positive control to confirm the fluidics merged the reaction mixtures successfully.
Instrument returns results in about one hour.
