"After reading Danny Sullivan's article on this, I wonder if Looksmart may have finally done something smart for a change, that is if everything works in the right way for them.
It is very evident that Looksmart depends upon its relationship with MSN to survive. They of course would downplay this stating they have other partners including About.com and Dogpile to name a few. However those partners do not even compare to what MSN offers Looksmart. Many believe, myself included that if MSN dumps Looksmart then we can go ahead and rename them "LookSmitten".
Therefore could it be that Looksmart has made this move to 1.) set themselves up to be acquired by Microsoft so they can incorporate a PPC model into MSN along with the crawler based search engine they are now developing, or 2.) try to set themselves up to take Overture's place as a neutral PPC provider, something which Overture lost when Yahoo decided to acquire them.
It will be interesting indeed to see how this all turns out. I have to also wonder if Looksmart has now set themselves up to be sued by Google or Overture or both? If I am not mistaken, both Google and Overture hold patents on their PPC models. Is Looksmart's PPC program proprietary? I guess we will have to see.
IMHO this is another move Looksmart had to make to survive and in doing so, they are gambling that things go their way. It almost seems like that chess game where your opponent continues to put you in check and you are able to find a way out of the dilemma each time, only to have him come back again and again on you. "
