If the MM's need shares to replace those they sold short when the volume and price spiked and they were caught without any inventory then the MM's will do what they can to get those shares back as cheap as they can.

Have you never heard of naked short selling? It wouldn't surprise me if Huss and associates are shorting the stock themselves through intermediaries.
