The main reason I use ignore is when I am reading a board like Zeev's where there are a few people who post non stop and mostly nonsense. I click my ignores on so I can get through the board quicker. Once I'm done, I click the ignores off .
The other reason is for people who I don't want to PM me. That feature works whether you have the ignore button on or off.
