I don't think the cost of the tag is the challenge. The cost and size of the reader may be a problem however. Hand-held spectrometers are as big as a phone and cost in the $2,000 range, both of which would seem to rule them out for the consumer.

A cell phone camera does not work like a spectrometer, so there has to be an attachment with a diffraction grating to use it. Even then the sensors in cameras measure RGB pixels and use software to interpolate the other color information which limits the resolution. I think the question is can they come up with an inexpensive attachment that delivers the necessary resolution.
