Several things went wrong with his initial purchase.

1. He should have bought a brand that was there to begin with so he didn't need to take out the flange in the sink. Most are now universal fits and you only need the wrench to replace.

2. Forgetting the above he should have bought a tub of plumbers putty. It's like working on plumbing and not buying Teflon tape.
