Only half of the worms lay eggs.

The female kind. Males don’t lay any. Thus if a pair of silkworms lays 300 eggs, you count the ratio as 150-to-1.

Evidently the numbers are fairly variable. I’ve seen value es less than 200. Projections also need to accommodate the fact that not every egg will grow to 5th instar and cocoon. Figure a 10% loss as a rough estimate.

Jon’s statement of a 100-to-1 amplification was slightly conservative, but he wasn’t off by a factor of 3.
