The UofM had a nonstandard English course. (I took it for the hell of it.) Basically it was meant for teachers who planned on working in ghetto schools. They translated the lower echelon's speech patterns so teachers could guide them into expressing themselves properly.

Phrases where the subjective replaced the objective (like the example above) were attributed to lower class individuals trying to sound like they came from a higher station in life. Sadly, it's all over the place now.
