Thank you for this! This day always reminds me of my grandfather.

He somehow was able to survive the 1st wave on Omaha beach. He was a part of the 116th Reg. 29th Infantry Division commanded a special small Recon Troop in the beginning, but through attrition became a battalion commander. I inherited a lot of cool memorabilia from his days slugging it out in Europe.

He made it all the way to Berlin without a scratch, but fought in every major battle along the way. Though he was a battalion commander he fought with this men. He would get reprimanded for it, but always said he could not properly lead and make critical decisions from the rear.

I had the honor to know him well until he passed of old age. He was a humble man, but tough as nails underneath it all!! You just knew never to cross him!!

Won many bronze and silver stars with oak leaf clusters, which I also now own along with the citations explaining what he did to get them. He would tell you he was just one man and he got lucky somehow. The true heroes gave it all.
