Is it true that the plaintiffs only need to think they have a case based on what the law firm tells them?



Yes. It is assumed that a plaintiff has acted, at least partially, on advice of their attorney.
And yes, attorneys often have other reasons for pursuing a case - ie.: setting a precedent for possible other similar suits in the future.
