As you read the point is debatable, and both the Japanese military, with no civilian constraints, and several in the American military, held views differing from those expressed in your article.

This has nothing to do with acumen or stupidity but rather about ending combat with the least cost in American lives as soon as possible.

Missing from your American fatalities in the Pacific are the WIA, over 250K. That number portrays the true ferocity of the conflict as much as does the KIA total.

You have no sound reason to argue that invading Japan itself wouldn't have resulted in far higher total casualties for the reasons mentioned in my article. The closer we got, Iwo and Okinawa, the higher the casualties.

If the Japanese had successfully landed in CA, they would have been begging for reinforcements as they approached the Rockies.

The Japanese military would have fought to the death for their home islands and probably would havestarved their own civilians to extend provisions.
