But with such few outstanding shares and a 2nd bankruptcy, how could cancelling common shares benefit them, especially with such big names invested at values over $1?

They did not come out of the 2017 bankruptcy with commons intact. Common holders were given warrants, not shares, and the new shares were given to the debt holders.
