On the other hand, I've seen BP pull out from partnerships before data readouts. No accounting for timing, for sure.

I remember few years ago a small biotech did a private placement and then announced a buyout 30 days later at 3x the offering price. Which sure looked like a sweetheart deal for those investors. No way you can put together a buyout in 30 days, so management knew damned well that a buyout was coming when they issued those shares.
