It's not a strong claim; it's arithmetic:

If (a) 128kbps encoding yields about one minute of music per megabyte of storage and (b) one gigabyte comprises 1024 megabytes, then (c) we're talking about a month's worth of minutes.

Best wishes,
John

The statement was also embellished if one uses the numbers in the PR.

Headline says... "Stores Over 30 Days of Continuous Music..."

However using the numbers they provide, it comes to 21 to 28 days for the 40 GB and that's encoded at 128kps. As the following article points out, that compression level causes a noticeable decline in music quality.

http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue8/ipod.htm

However, according to that article, the number of songs that can be stored on a hard drive depends mostly on file size, and you could end up with half the number of songs if the compression effect were reduced to improve sound quality.

The author found that 256kps was needed to get music qualtiy that was close to CD quality. e.Digital made its claim on the higher-compressed 128kbs.

I thought it interesting when a poster on RB claimed that the "iPOD gets panned for sound quality at 128..." and further falsely claimed that "itunes mostly offers music at 128" kbs.
