I've got two words for you, Wavefront Coding.


I have pondered the same issues that you have in your post. It sent me on a journey that let me to CDM in Boulder Colorado. They are in the process of perfecting an analog process (in the form of a ASIC enabled DSP attached to an image sensor) that brings an extended focal length to guess what?... Camera phone sensors. The extended depth of field will allow camera phone capture accuracy to extend above the 90% range. Another by-product of the technology is that the entire picture (front to back and left to right) will be in focus, regardless of the number of focal points and the distance to the camera. One more thing, the resolution is 3.2Mp.

I know it sounds too good to be true, but I have been doing research on this technology for years. Only now (in the next 2-3 months) will such an item actually come to the market. The timing is perfect, IMO.
