chipguy, please update me then. Last that I looked, Itanium was co-developed by Intel and HP, and HP had a huge role in developing the Itanium 2. Seems to me that both companies own that product, do you know any differently? Is there anything that would prevent HP from using Itanium IP in any future processors they may develope?
1) EPIC is based on research conducted in HP labs in the late
1980s to replace RISC/PA
2) HP wanted to get out of the uP manufacturing business
beyond 0.5 um due to escalating costs
3) HP approached Intel to jointly develop EPIC/VLIW.
4) The 1994 agreement between Intel and HP to develop EPIC/IA64
prohibits HP from manufacturing uPs based on IA64
5) Both Intel and HP engineers were heavily involved in
the design of Merced, McKinley, and Madison. HP involvement
was apparently heaviest for McKinley but did not represent
the majority of the team.
6) The IA64 IP issue is a little bit more complicated than
you think. Do a patent search for assignee equal to "Idea
Corporation" of Cupertino CA. Then do a google search to
find out the story behind it.
