Scientists found plastic in the gut of every single sea turtle they examined according to a new study.1
It's especially alarming given that just a few pieces of plastic can be lethal for sea turtles.2
Despite the risks,18 billion pounds of plastic waste end up in our oceans every year. Polystyrene foam -- what most of us call Styrofoam -- is one of the worst forms of plastic pollution. It never fully degrades, leaving behind tiny particles that remain in the environment for centuries.3
To protect sea turtles and other ocean wildlife, the solution is clear: reduce, reduce, reduce our plastic. We can start by banning polystyrene foam. Take action to ban it in your state today.
For a bird, fish or turtle, these small pieces of plastic are easily mistaken for food. When ingested, this waste can block animals' digestive systems, leading to death by starvation.
The billions upon billions of plastic pieces in our oceans break down into smaller plastic particles -- called microplastics. And it lasts in the environment somewhere between centuries to forever.4
Meanwhile, people throw away tons of plastic stuff every single day, with devastating consequences for wildlife. Tell your governor to ban plastic polystyrene foam today.
It's not just turtles. And the stories are piling up.
In November, a dead sperm whale washed ashore in Indonesia with 115 drinking cups, 25 plastic bags, plastic bottles, two flip-flops and more plastic trash in its stomach.5
Last June, a dying pilot whale was found off the coast of Thailand, after having swallowed more than 80 plastic bags.
Last April, another dead sperm whale washed up on a beach in Spain with 64 pounds of plastic and waste in its stomach.6
We know the plastic waste in our oceans, rivers and lakes injures or kills wildlife. Millions of marine animals die each year from plastic waste, including starving to death from indigestible microplastic in their system.7
To protect turtles, whales and other ocean creatures, we need to do something about plastic pollution. Let's start by banning plastic polystyrene foam. Take action in your state now.
