I don't recall a compaq case but in the case of Digital let me ask you, what would you do if you were sued in another companies home state? Remember that Intel counter sued Digital and one could just as easily say that Digital settled. Intel got a fully completed modern fab, a design center, office buildings, engineering staff, an ARM license, PCI64 controllers, ethernet devices, network controller designs etc. The cost was $500million. Who took who to the cleaners?

As for Intergraph, that case is still in the courts but I would say that considering their x86 license was at stake, any money Intel pays to settle that case is like paying an insurance premium against an ignorant jury.
