The MMs have to take trade orders from bag holders and front-loaders.

They need to cover the shares shorted at higher prices. Most trading is done with algorithms these days, so they just go with the way they're programmed, which is to follow the pattern of 99% of the stocks out there: short any sharp moves up, and then drop it to cover.
