The stock market was originally designed with a long-term perspective in mind. Greed and instant gratification has inspired short-term trading strategies, which are actually frowned upon by most brokerages (hence the rules governing wash trades and day trading).

Publicly-traded companies have the ability to receive non-toxic financing based on the prospects of their operations as well as the value of their stock. THAT is why some businesses choose to go public. Dilution is just one of the easiest and most common ways to raise funds, but it’s not the only way.

Then why be publicly traded to begin with unless as a means to finance growth?

I could be wrong but i think a spin off was discussed with payless down the road?
