Right. Our company did not allow the use of free source emails because all those were a point of concern. Which is why most will choose to upgrade Exchange 2010.
I am only referring to email server. My job as a system admin is to manage the servers and it's infrastructure. That job sometimes involve procuring software that I know that we need. I don't know what else do you think I was talking about. It's not my job to file things away for other departments or to keep their department in compliance.
As for free email archiving solutions. You can go with well-known trusted products like Outlook/Barracuda, etc. Most people will go this route. No reason not to and take your chance with some no name brand. Losing emails is a good cause for getting terminated.
