"Socialized medicine" comes in a lot of different shades.

I disagree, it is the answer. Companies couldn't get away with a lot of the stuff they do now, including abusing the system with knee transplants, if an effective single payer system demanded clear risk/reward/benefit calculations to support treatments and pricing of those treatments.
