Many tried to "keep the faith", probably far too long, but they gave JF the benefit of the doubt, as well as implementing the "it can't keep going down, can it?" mentality. By the time they realized it could indeed keep going down, they jumped, probably too late. They also may have been thinking it was going nowhere fast, and that the money was dead, and could be better used elsewhere. These people probably had a too large percentage of their usable cash in too few equities. Taxes don't play into it too much IMHO, as people get fixated on their current portfolio balances rather than future financial strategies. Just a few thoughts on it.
