Researchers can use university equipment for research that doesnt involve the university. Obviously the university would have to be compensated in some manner and this would be one of the costs associated with said research.

Example

It will then be determined if Fordham University is engaged in the research.
If it is determined that Fordham Universtiy is engaged, the research study will go through a formal review by the Fordham IRB. If it is determined that Fordham is not engaged in the research, the research study will only require an administrative review by the IRB manager or the IRB Chair.



The benefit here is the research is being conducted on grounds give its students access to developing research skills and this in turn attracts future students. Also could open doors to future university inolved research. Not to mention it brings in revenue for equipment that may otherwise go unused.
