If Im not mistaken, Conmed was actually on the block to be sold just a few years ago. I do not know the history but to think that a relatively small company that was looking for its own suitor is now in a position to buy a company potentially eventually worth well over a billion dollars is hard to believe. A collaboration makes much more sense. And, if you go on LinkedIn and look at Sachin's job description while he was at Conmed, you'd see that these types of market development / collaboration opportunities are what he was there for.
